Residential Heating and Cooling Rebate Program for Riverside, CA

This special program offers rebates to Riverside residents who upgrade to energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, helping you save on energy costs while staying comfortable year-round. If you’re a residential electric customer in Riverside, CA, now is the perfect time to invest in a new heat pump or air conditioning system for your home.

Eligible Systems: Split Systems and Packaged Units

There are two types of systems eligible for the rebate: split systems and packaged units. For split systems, both the condenser and evaporator coil must be brand-new and installed at the same time. To qualify, the system’s Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) must meet specific efficiency standards. Additionally, both the condensing unit and evaporator coil model numbers must be listed together in the AHRI Directory and meet the requirements as a combined system.

Heat Pumps vs. Air Conditioning: What’s Best for Riverside, CA?

When choosing between a heat pump and air conditioning system in Riverside’s mild-to-hot climate, there are some important factors to consider:

  • Heating and Cooling Capabilities: A heat pump both heats and cools your home, transferring heat into your home in cooler months. In contrast, an air conditioner is only designed for cooling and requires a separate heating source, like a furnace.
  • Climate Suitability: Riverside’s moderate winters make heat pumps an ideal solution, as they work efficiently without freezing issues. Air conditioners are better suited for more extreme climates but still perform well for cooling during our hot summer months.
  • Cost Efficiency: Air conditioners often have lower upfront costs, but may result in higher utility bills. Heat pumps are more energy-efficient, which can lead to lower operating costs over time.

How Does a Heat Pump Work in Riverside?

Heat pumps are designed to efficiently cool and heat your home by transferring heat between the inside and outside air. During Riverside’s hot summers, the heat pump pulls heat from your home and releases it outdoors. It does this using three main components: a compressor, condenser, and evaporator coil. These work together to convert refrigerant from gas to liquid and back again, removing excess heat and humidity from your home.

In cooler months, the process reverses. The heat pump absorbs heat from the outdoor air—even during Riverside’s cooler winter nights—and brings it indoors to keep your home warm. Heat pumps can efficiently extract heat even from cold air, making them a great year-round solution for Riverside residents.

What Are the Rebate Amounts?

  • Air Conditioner: Receive $150 per ton for an AC unit with a SEER rating of 15.2 – 15.9, and $250 per ton for an AC unit with a SEER of 16 or greater.
  • Electric Heat Pump: Get $750 per ton for a heat pump air conditioner with a SEER rating of 15.2 and above.
  • HVAC Tune-Up: You can also receive a $25 rebate for an HVAC tune-up, which must include a refrigerant level check.
